Scleromochlus was named by Woodward (1907). It is the type genus of Scleromochloidea.

It was assigned to Dinosauria by Woodward (1907); to Ornithosuchidae by Watson (1917); to Procompsognathidae by Romer (1966); to Theropoda by Swinton (1970); to Ornithodira by Sereno (1991) and Novas (1996); to Scleromochlidae by Huene (1922), Huene (1942), Romer (1956), Kuhn (1966), Charig (1967), Romer (1972), Carroll (1988) and Benton (1999); to Pterosauria by Headden and Campos (2014); and to Lagerpetidae by Müller et al. (2023).
