Taxonomy
Fusus mathewsonii was named by Gabb (1864). Its type specimen is ANSP 4180 and is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Surculites mathewsonii by Stewart (1927), Turner (1938), Squires (1984) and Squires (1987).
