Cuspidaria russelli was named by Hanna (1927). Its type specimen is UCMP 31015 and is a 3D body fossil.
It was synonymized subjectively with Cardiomya dolabraeformis by Stewart (1930); it was recombined as Cardiomya russelli by Squires (1984).
