Germanodactylus was named by Young (1964). Its type is Pterodactylus cristatus.
It was assigned to Pterodactylidae by Charig (1967), Carroll (1988); to Dsungaripteroidea by Bakhurina (1993); to Germanodactylidae by Young (1964), Unwin and Heinrich (1999); to Dsungaripteroidea by Unwin (2003), Maisch et al. (2004); and to Lophocratia by Andres et al. (2014).
