Promacrurus asymmetricus was named by David (1956). Its type specimen is CIT 10522, an other (scale), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Standard Oil Company well Alferitz No. 1, which is in an Eocene/Oligocene deep-water horizon in California.
