Cancer klipsteini was named by von Meyer (1862). It is the type species of Liopsalis.
It was recombined as Palaeocarpilius klipsteini by Schweitzer (2003) and Schweitzer et al. (2010); it was recombined as Liopsalis klipsteini by Schweitzer et al. (2018).
