Casea was named by Williston (1910). Its type is Casea broilii. It is the type genus of Caseidae. It was considered paraphyletic by Maddin et al. (2008).
It was assigned to Araeoscelidae by Williston (1910); to Synapsida by Gauthier et al. (1989); and to Caseidae by Hay (1930), Reisz (1986), Carroll (1988) and Maddin et al. (2008).
