Taxonomy
Platyxanthus was named by Milne-Edwards (1863). It is extant. It is the type genus of Platyxanthidae.

It was assigned to Platyxanthidae by Schweitzer (2005), Karasawa and Schweitzer (2006), Luque et al. (2017), Schweitzer et al. (2020).
