Elephantosaurus was named by Vjuschkov (1969). It is not extant. Its type is Elephantosaurus jachimovitschi.
It was assigned to Kannemeyeriidae by Carroll (1988); to Stahleckeriini by Battail and Surkov (2000); to Stahleckeriinae by Ivakhnenko (2008); and to Kannemeyeriiformes by Kammerer et al. (2013).
