Nothura was named by Wagler (1827). It is extant.

It was assigned to Crypturidae by Mercerat (1897); and to Tinamidae by Lambrecht (1933), Houde (1988), Carroll (1988), Clements et al. (2017), Tambussi et al. (2023).
