Taxonomy
Aotagnostus culminosus was named by Öpik (1979). Its type specimen is CPC14166 and is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Triplagnostus (Aotagnostus) culminosus by Laurie (1988); it was recombined as Ptychagnostus culminosus by Peng and Robison (2000) and Jell and Adrain (2002).
