Dromornithidae was named by Fürbringer (1888) [also but incorrectly attributed to Vigors 1825].
It was assigned to Casuariiformes by Lambrecht (1933), Wetmore (1960), Carroll (1988); to Anseriformes by Murray and Megirian (1998); to Dromornithiformes by Livezey and Zusi (2007); to Dromornithes by Worthy et al. (2017); and to Gastornithiformes by Worthy and Nguyen (2020).
