Emeus was named by Riechenbach (1852).

It was assigned to Anomalopterygidae by Lambrecht (1933) and Wetmore (1960); to Dinornithidae by Carroll (1988); and to Emeidae by Worthy (1997) and Bunce et al. (2009).
