Pandion was named by Savigny (1809). It is extant. Its type is Falco haliaetus.
It was assigned to Pandioninae by Hay (1930); and to Pandionidae by Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956), Warter (1976), Becker (1985), Rasmussen et al. (1987), Carroll (1988), Olson and Rasmussen (2001), Livezey and Zusi (2007), Louchart et al. (2008), del Hoyo et al. (2014) and Clements et al. (2017).
