Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
J. F. Miller 1984Individual elements coniform, proclined, nongeniculate; bilaterally symmetrical or nearly so; long, very slender, oval in cross section; anterior edge a smooth curve both longitudinally and transversely, posterior edge usually drawn out into a keel extending the entire length of element; internal cavity extends to element tip so that a true cusp is lacking. Elements contain a relatively high proportion of organic material and grew from the tip downward by addition of internal growth lamellae. Apparatus unimembrate, consisting of two half-apparatuses of parallel-oriented elements arranged with the concave edges of each half-apparatus facing each other and the tips at the same end; each half-apparatus is symmetrical and consists of as many as 13 elements. Phakelodus differs from two of the other genera in the family in lacking posterolateral keels; the type species of Protohertzina has a posterior and two symmetrically arranged posterolateral keels, and Amphigeisina has similar posterolateral keels but no posterior keel. Phakelodus has only a posterior keel. Gapparodus has no keels and has a groove on each lateral side
