Botauroides was named by Shufeldt (1915). Its type is Botauroides parvus.
It was assigned to Ardeidae by Shufeldt (1915), Lambrecht (1933); to Botaurinae by Hay (1930), Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956); to Primobucconidae by Feduccia and Martin (1976), Olson (1985), Carroll (1988); and to Sandcoleidae by Houde and Olson (1992).
