Fryxellodontidae was named by Miller (1980). It is the type family of Fryxellodontacea.
It was assigned to Fryxellodontacea by Clark et al. (1981); to Prioniodontacea by Mestre and Heredia (2013); and to Proconodontida by Pyle and Barnes (2002), Carlorosi et al. (2019).
