Bucerotidae was named by Rafinesque (1815). It is extant. Its type is Buceros.

It was assigned to Bucerotides by Livezey and Zusi (2007); to Bucerotiformes by Carroll (1988), del Hoyo et al. (2014) and Clements et al. (2017); and to Bucerotes by Mayr (2022).
