It was assigned to Coraciiformes by Olson (1975); to Upupiformes by Mayr (2000); to Upupides by Livezey and Zusi (2007); to Bucerotiformes by Carroll (1988), Mlikovsky (2002), del Hoyo et al. (2014) and Clements et al. (2017); and to Upupiformes by Mayr (2022).
