Gypsornis was named by Milne-Edwards (1868). It is not extant.

It was assigned to Rallinae by Brodkorb (1967); to Rallidae by Zittel (1890), Lambrecht (1933), Brunet (1970); to Idiornithidae by Olson (1977), Carroll (1988); and to Cariamidae by Mlikovsky (2002).
