Taxonomy
Myctophum mexicanum was named by Gilbert (1890). It is extant.

It was recombined as Lampanyctus (Triphoturus) mexicanus by Fraser-Brunner (1949); it was recombined as Triphoturus mexicanus by Fitch (1969), Fierstine et al. (2012) and Schwarzhans and Aguilera (2013).
