Palaeophasianus was named by Shufeldt (1913). Its type is Palaeophasianus meleagroides.
It was assigned to Phasianinae by Hay (1930); to Phasianidae by Lambrecht (1933); to Tetraonidae by Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956); to Aramidae by Cracraft (1968); and to Geranoididae by Carroll (1988), Mayr (2022).
