Sebastodes was named by Gill (1861) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Sebastes (Sebastodes) by Barsukov (1989).

It was assigned to Scorpaenidae by Hay (1902), Jordan (1907), Jordan and Gilbert (1919), David (1943), Schwarzhans (1985); to Sebastes by Barsukov (1989); and to Scorpaeniformes by Sepkoski (2002).
