Taxonomy
Diatryma was named by Cope (1876). It is not extant. Its type is Diatryma gigantea. It is the type genus of Diatrymidae.

It was synonymized subjectively with Gastornis by Mlikovsky (2002).

It was assigned to Gastornithidae by Hay (1902); to Stereornithes by Lucas (1903); to Diatrymatidae by Hay (1930); and to Diatrymidae by Matthew and Granger (1917), Lambrecht (1933), Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1960), Carroll (1988).
