Plesiocathartes was named by Gaillard (1908). Its type is Plesiocathartes europaeus.

It was assigned to Cathartidae by Gaillard (1908), Lambrecht (1933); to Falcones by de Villalta (1963); to Vulturidae by Carroll (1988); to Leptosomidae by Mayr (2005); and to Leptosomiformes by Mayr and Smith (2019).
