Taxonomy
Palaeochenoides was named by Shufeldt (1916). It is not extant. Its type is Palaeochenoides miocaenus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Pseudodontornis by Harrison and Walker (1976); it was synonymized subjectively with Pelagornis by Mayr et al. (2007).

It was assigned to Cyphornithidae by Wemore (1928), Hay (1930), Lambrecht (1933), Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956), Wetmore (1960), Hopson (1964), Howard (1972); and to Pelagornithidae by Carroll (1988).
