Taxonomy
Sulae was named by Reichenbach (1849) [also attributed to Sharpe 1891]. It is extant.

It was reranked as the unranked clade Sulida by Livezey and Zusi (2007).

It was assigned to Pelecaniformes by Howard (1968), Olson (1980), Olson (1985), Goedert (1988), Carroll (1988), Olson and Hasegawa (1996) and Goedert and Cornish (2002); and to Pelecanides by Livezey and Zusi (2007).
