It was synonymized subjectively with Hydrobatidae by Clements et al. (2017).

It was assigned to Oceanitoidea by Livezey and Zusi (2007); and to Procellariiformes by Olson (1975), Olson and James (1982), Olson (1985), Olson (1985), Olson (1985), Carroll (1988), del Hoyo et al. (2014), Chesser et al. (2018).
