Delphinornis was named by Wiman (1905).

It was assigned to Palaeeudyptinae by Brodkorb (1963); to Anthropornithinae by Simpson (1946), Tambussi et al. (2006); to Sphenisciformes by Ksepka et al. (2006); and to Spheniscidae by Wiman (1905), Ameghino (1905), Lambrecht (1933), Simpson (1971), Carroll (1988), Myrcha et al. (2002), Jadwiszczak (2006), Jadwiszczak and Mörs (2011), Jadwiszczak and Mörs (2019).

Synonyms

Notodyptes was named by Marples (1953).

It was synonymized subjectively with Archaeospheniscus by Simpson (1971), Myrcha et al. (2002); it was synonymized subjectively with Delphinornis by Ksepka and Clarke (2010).

It was assigned to Palaeeudyptinae by Brodkorb (1963).
