Spheniscus was named by Brisson (1760). It is extant.
It was assigned to Spheniscinae by Simpson (1946); and to Spheniscidae by Carroll (1988), Stucchi et al. (2003), Gohlich (2007), Soto-Acuña et al. (2008), Acosta Hospitaleche and Tambussi (2008), del Hoyo et al. (2014) and Clements et al. (2017).
