Marmosa was named by Gray (1821). It is extant. It is the type genus of Marmosinae.
It was assigned to Marmosini by Patton et al. (1996); and to Didelphidae by Carroll (1988), Salles et al. (2006) and Ladaveze and Muizon (2010).
