Eutemnodus was named by Bravard (1858) [a nomen nudum in Bravard 1858 and validated by Burmeister 1891 according to Riggs 1934]. It is not extant.
It was synonymized subjectively with Hyaenodon by Lydekker (1885).
It was assigned to Borhyaenidae by Marshall (1978) and McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Borhyaeninae by Forasiepi et al. (2007).
