Taxonomy

Pharsophorus was named by Ameghino (1897) [1897a]. Its type is Pharsophorus lacerans.

It was assigned to Proborhyaenidae by Ameghino (1897); to Borhyaeninae by Patterson and Marshall (1978); and to Borhyaenidae by Simpson (1948), McKenna and Bell (1997), Goin et al. (2010).
