Proborhyaena was named by Ameghino (1897). Its type is Proborhyaena gigantea.

It was assigned to Proborhyaeninae by Marshall (1978), Patterson and Marshall (1978); to Borhyaenidae by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Proborhyaenidae by Ameghino (1897), de Muizon (1999); and to Proborhyaenidae by Engelman et al. (2020).
