Taxonomy

Prothylacynus was named by Ameghino (1891). It is not extant. Its type is Prothylacynus patagonicus. It is the type genus of Prothylacynidae.

It was assigned to Thylacynidae by Ameghino (1891); to Dasyuridae by Lydekker (1894); to Prothylacynidae by Ameghino (1894); to Prothylacyninae by Marshall (1979); to Borhyaenidae by de Muizon (1994) and McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Prothylacyninae by Marshall (1978) and de Muizon (1999).

Synonyms

Prothylacocyon was named by Winge (1923) [presumably a misspelling or emendation of _Prothylacynus_].

It was synonymized objectively with Prothylacynus by Marshall (1979).
Napodonictis was named by Ameghino (1894) [1894a].

It was synonymized subjectively with Prothylacynus by Marshall (1979).

It was assigned to Prothylacynidae by Ameghino (1894).
