Chelodina oblonga was named by Gray (1841). It is extant.

It was recombined as Macrochelodina oblonga by Wells and Wellington (1985); it was recombined as Macrodiremys oblonga by McCord and Joseph-Ouni (2007); it was recombined as Chelodina (Macrodiremys) oblonga by George and Thompson (2010); it was recombined as Chelodina (Macrochelodina) oblonga by van Dijk et al. (2014), Shea et al. (2020).
