Gemmellarocarcinus loerenthey was named by Checchia-Rispoli (1905). It is not extant. It is the type species of Gemmellarocarcinus.

It was corrected as Gemmellarocarcinus loerentheyi by Muller and Collins (1991), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Ceccon (2011), Schweitzer et al. (2012), Beschin et al. (2018).
