Taxonomy
Elephantulus was named by Thomas and Schwann (1906). It is extant. It is the type genus of Elephantulini.
It was assigned to Macroscelidini by Van Valen (1967); to Macroscelididae by McKenna and Bell (1997), Wilson and Reeder (2005); to Elephantulini by Dumbacher et al. (2016); and to Elephantulinae by Senut and Pickford (2021).
