Leipsanolestes was named by Simpson (1928). It is not extant. Its type is Leipsanolestes siegfriedti.
It was synonymized subjectively with Leptacodon by Simpson (1929), Simpson (1935), Simpson (1945), Gazin (1949); it was synonymized subjectively with Entomolestes by McKenna (1960), Van Valen (1967), Delson (1971); it was synonymized subjectively with Talpavus by Robinson (1968).
It was assigned to Adapisoricidae by Hay (1930); to Erinaceomorpha by Simpson (1928), Krishtalka (1976), Bown and Schankler (1982), McKenna and Bell (1997); to Erinaceidae by Novacek et al. (1985), Scott (2006); and to Erinaceoidea by Gunnell et al. (2008).
