Taxonomy
Proterix was named by Matthew (1903). It is not extant. Its type is Proterix loomisi.

It was assigned to Erinaceinae by Hay (1930); to Protericini by Van Valen (1967) and Gunnell et al. (2008); and to Erinaceidae by Matthew (1903), Novacek et al. (1985), Gould (1995) and Korth et al. (2022).
