Protorhipis was named by Andrae (1853). It is not extant. It is considered to be a form taxon.

It was reranked as Hausmannia (Protorhipis) by Kimura and Kim (1988).

It was assigned to Dipteridinae by Knowlton (1919); and to Hausmannia by Kimura and Kim (1988).
