Hesperosorex was named by Hibbard (1957). It is not extant. Its type is Hesperosorex lovei.

It was assigned to Neomyini by Van Valen (1967); to Soricidae by Hibbard (1957), Carroll (1988); and to Nectogalini by Gunnell et al. (2008).
