Pteraspis dorfi was named by Bryant (1932). Its type specimen is PU 13492, a partial skeleton (A dorsal shield imbedded in red limestone), and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Protaspis dorfi by Bryant (1933); it was recombined as Protaspis (Protaspis) dorfi by Denison (1970).
