Taxonomy
Metapterodon was named by Stromer (1923). It is not extant. It is the type genus of Metapterodontini.
It was synonymized subjectively with Pterodon by Van Valen (1967).
It was assigned to Hyaenodontinae by Savage (1965) and Morales et al. (1998); to Hyaenodontidae by McKenna and Bell (1997) and Morales et al. (2008); to Koholiinae by Solé et al. (2014); to Hyainailourinae by Borths and Stevens (2017); and to Metapterodontini by Morales and Pickford (2017).
