Procynodictis was named by Wortman and Matthew (1899). Its type is Procynodictis vulpiceps.

It was assigned to Uintacyonidae by Hay (1902); to Caniformia by Flynn and Galiano (1982); to Miacidae by Wortman and Matthew (1899), Flynn (1998); and to Carnivoraformes by Solé (2014).
