Kaokoxylon was named by Kraeusel (1956). It is not extant. Its type is Dadoxylon sclerosum.

It was assigned to Plantae by Andrews (1970); and to Gymnospermae by Lakhanpal et al. (1976), Chandra and Tewari (1991).
