Caulopteris tessellata was named by Schimper and Mougeot (1844). It is not extant. It is the type species of Cyatheopteris, Lepidodendrites.

It was recombined as Cyatheopteris tessellata by Schimper (1869); it was recombined as Lepidodendrites tessellata by Fliche (1906).
