Murex foveolatus was named by Hinds (1844). It is extant.

It was recombined as Muricidea foveolata by Cooper (1888); it was recombined as Ocinebrina foveolata by Arnold (1903); it was recombined as Tritonalia foveolata by Grant, IV and Gale (1931), Soper and Grant and IV (1932); it was recombined as Ocinebra foveolata by Valentine and Meade (1961); it was recombined as Ocenebra foveolata by Marincovich (1976); it was recombined as Paciocinebrina foveolata by Hendy (2021).
