Mimolagus was named by Bohlin (1951). Its type is Mimolagus rodens.
It was assigned to Lagomorpha by Bleefeld and McKenna (1985), McKenna and Bell (1997); to Duplicidentata by Asher et al. (2005); to Mimotonidae by Carroll (1988), Averianov (1994), Fostowicz-Frelik et al. (2015); and to Mimolagidae by Li et al. (2016).
