Ptychocarpus was named by Weiss (1869). It is not extant. Its type is Ptychocarpus hexastichus.

It was assigned to Pteridophyta by Andrews (1970); and to Marattiales by Lakhanpal et al. (1976), Chandra and Tewari (1991).
